Schoolchildren Play Chess on the Roof of London’s O2 Arena

The primary school students from The Pointer School in Greenwich made headlines by playing chess on top of London’s iconic O2 Arena, 52 meters above the ground.

The symbolic match was more than a publicity stunt. It marked the official launch of a new free after-school chess club open to students across Greenwich and Southeast London.

Why Chess, and Why the Sky?

The goal to celebrate the educational power of chess, boosting memory, concentration, logic, and creativity and make it more accessible to young learners.

The event also honored the school's long-standing chess tradition, having previously nurtured prodigy Shreyas Royal, now England’s youngest-ever grandmaster.
