Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A New Chapter at the 2025 Esports World Cup

In a landmark development for the chess community, the game is set to make its debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31 to August 3. This inclusion signifies a significant step in integrating traditional board games into the rapidly expanding esports ecosystem

A Historic Inclusion

Chess's addition to the EWC lineup is the result of a collaboration between Chess.com and the Esports World Cup Foundation. The tournament will feature a substantial $1.5 million prize pool, attracting top-tier talent from around the globe. Notably, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen will serve as the event's ambassador, aiming to bridge the gap between classical chess and the digital gaming world

Innovative Format

The competition will adopt a rapid 10+0 format, where each player has 10 minutes per game without any increment. In the event of a tie, matches will be decided by a single Armageddon game, ensuring high-stakes excitement. Qualification for the event includes the top 12 players from the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) and four additional spots determined through a Last Chance Qualifier in Riyadh .

Bridging Communities

The inclusion of chess in the EWC represents more than just a new tournament; it symbolizes the merging of traditional and digital gaming cultures. Carlsen expressed enthusiasm about this development, stating, "This partnership is an incredible opportunity to grow the game, by introducing chess to new audiences and inspiring the next generation of players" .

Looking Ahead

As chess continues to evolve and embrace new platforms, its presence in the Esports World Cup marks a significant milestone. This event not only offers a fresh competitive arena for seasoned players but also introduces the strategic depth of chess to a broader, digitally engaged audience.
